Kelvin Kamuhia Kingóri | Kenya | Purpose & Enthusiasm

Skilled Group Facilitator | Zumba Instructor | Dance Educator | Mental Health Advocate | Digital Skills Trainer

My name is Kelvin Kamuhia Kingóri, and I hail from Nairobi, Kenya. I grew up in an underserved community that lacked opportunities for growth and development. Despite facing various challenges in my upbringing, I discovered my passion for dance at a young age, which became my escape from the harsh realities of life in my community. I spent countless hours practicing different dance moves and routines, nurturing my love for dance. As I grew older, I used dance as a tool to inspire and uplift others in my community. I organized dance classes and workshops for children and young adults, teaching them various styles of dance and helping them to develop their skills. Through this work, I discovered the transformative power of dance on individuals' mental and emotional well-being. It can build confidence, develop self-esteem, and help overcome trauma and other life challenges. Driven by my passion for helping others, I decided to expand my skillset and became a mental health champion, skilled group facilitator, Zumba instructor, and digital skills trainer. With these skills, I can provide more support and resources to the people in my community who need them the most. My dedication to this work as a dance educator and mental health advocate has been noticed by organizations and individuals who recognize the positive impact I have on my community. I have been invited to teach dance and facilitate workshops in different parts of Kenya.

Today, I continue to use my skills and expertise to equip individuals with tools for success, empowering them to achieve their goals and dreams. I remain committed to my work as a dance educator and mental health advocate, and my passion for helping others continues to inspire and uplift those around me.

What were the biggest initial hurdles you faced and how did you overcome them?

One of the major challenges I have encountered in my work is the scarcity of resources, including funding, materials, safe spaces, and equipment required to carry out my work effectively.

Another obstacle that I face is the limited access to technology, especially in underserved communities. Reliable internet and computer equipment are often lacking, hindering digital skills training and online advocacy efforts.

Additionally, mental health stigma is prevalent in Kenya, making it challenging for mental health advocates to promote awareness and encourage individuals to seek help. Overcoming this stigma is crucial to breaking down barriers and providing necessary support to those in need.

What advice do you have for young people locally and internationally who are just starting out in their careers or pursuing their passions?

The famous quote "love what you do and do what you love" embodies the idea of pursuing work that aligns with your interests and values, and committing to the effort required to excel. To succeed in any field, a combination of passion and hard work is essential. Approaching your work with a sense of purpose and enthusiasm can help you overcome obstacles and achieve your goals.
